About Massey Ferguson
In 1847, Daniel Massey opened a workshop building mechanical threshers. 32 years later, what was then the Massey Manufacturing Co. relocated to Toronto and became one of the city’s largest employers. In 1891, Massey merged with A. Harris to become the largest agricultural equipment manufacturer in Canada (as well as the rest of the British Empire). They were a full-line maker, with well-built farm equipment.
By 1910, Massey-Harris dipped their toes into the tractor business, but it wasn’t until the 1930’s that they really hit their stride with a very successful line of small and medium sized tractors, as well as the world’s first mass-produced self-propelled combine. Business and sales continued to grow, and in 1953, the company merged with the Ferguson Company.
Competition was fierce during the sixties and early seventies, and Massey-Ferguson was always a player as the modern farm continued to evolve. They had (and still have) a very global mindset, serving agriculture needs all over the world. In 1994, when they were acquired by AGCO Corporation, 87% of their machinery was sold outside of North America. In 2022, the company celebrated its 175th anniversary, and they show no signs of stopping!
